By following these maintenance practices, you can help extend the life of your lithium batteries and ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Regular care and attention to charging, storage, and handling will contribute to better performance and longevity.
Overview
- A Lithium Battery BMS' can turn off the battery to protect the cells. Engaging a charger will turn the battery back on.
- Always use a Lithium Charger, an incorrect charger can damage the cells inside a lithium battery.
- Always use the correct charging application for Lithium Batteries. Whether it is an invertor, convertor, or charger make sure it has a lithium setting. Otherwise you can damage the battery or the charger as well.
- Lithium Batteries can handle a much deeper depth of discharge than lead acid batteries and can be left in storage without needing charging or cycling much longer than traditional lead acid.
1. Storage and Handling
- Temperature Control: Store lithium batteries in a cool, dry place. Ideal storage temperatures are between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures (both high and low) as this can damage the battery.
- Avoid Full Discharge: If you need to store the battery for an extended period, aim to store it with a charge level between 30% and 50%. Avoid storing it fully charged or fully discharged.
- Keep Dry: Ensure the battery terminals and contacts remain dry. Moisture can cause short-circuiting and other issues.
2. Charging Practices
- Use the Correct Charger: Always use the charger specifically designed for your lithium battery. Using an incorrect charger can lead to overcharging, overheating, or undercharging.
- Avoid Overcharging: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding charging. Overcharging can lead to overheating and potential battery damage.
- Charge at Room Temperature: Avoid charging the battery in extremely hot or cold environments. The optimal charging temperature is usually between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F).
- Partial Charges are Fine: Lithium batteries do not need to be fully charged or fully discharged regularly. Partial charges are fine and can help maintain battery health.
3. Usage Tips
- Avoid Deep Discharges: Try not to let the battery discharge below 20% regularly. Deep discharges can stress the battery and shorten its lifespan.
- Use the Battery Regularly: If you’re storing a lithium battery for an extended period, it’s beneficial to use and recharge it periodically. This helps to maintain the battery’s health.
4. Safety Precautions
- Monitor Temperature: If the battery becomes excessively hot during use or charging, stop using it immediately and allow it to cool down.
- Inspect for Damage: Regularly check the battery for signs of physical damage, swelling, or leakage. If you notice any of these issues, discontinue use and safely dispose of the battery.
- Avoid Short-Circuits: Ensure that the battery terminals do not come into contact with metal objects, which can cause short-circuits and potential hazards.
5. Firmware and Updates
- Keep Software Updated: If your device has firmware that manages battery performance, keep it updated. Manufacturers often release updates to improve battery management and performance.
6. Manufacturer’s Guidelines
- Follow Recommendations: Always refer to and follow the manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations for your specific battery model. Different batteries may have unique requirements and best practices.
Most Lithium Batteries will tell you the percent charge of the battery through a small LCD screen on the battery or mobile app. If for some reason you do not have access to those this guide will tell you State of Charge relative to the batterie's voltage.
