Know Your Golf Cart Battery
A golf cart battery is used to power an electric golf cart or utility vehicle and needs to be maintained at minimum monthly.
Distilled water is required to refill the deep cycle batteries and only fill batteries that are fully charged.
Never over-fill the battery cell!! Only 1/4″ above the battery plate is recommended
How Golf Cart Batteries are Wired Together
Lead Acid golf cart batteries are linked together by series cables that are 6 AWG (OEM), 4 AWG (best) or 2 AWG for after market speed controllers.
The individual golf cart batteries are wired together in series to achieve the voltage the golf cart requires to operate.
When batteries are wired in series, the voltage of each battery is added together but the capacity remains the same.
Battery Series Example: Six Trojan T-105 (225 ah each) in series will equal a nominal voltage of 36 volts total but only 225 ah. The correct battery pack voltage at full charge will be 39.6VDC. The charger should charge 36 volt bank at about 42 volts.
Note: only 50% of a lead acid batteries capacity should be used. Over discharge will damage the batteries and void warranty.
How to Measure a Lead Acid Golf Cart Batteries Health
The most cost effective way to test the health of your golf cart batteries is with a battery hydrometer.
A battery hydrometer will measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte inside. To perform a battery hydrometer test, first fully charge the batteries and record the specific gravity (sg) of every cell .
A healthy battery will have three cells that have sg at 1.256 or higher. If a cell is lagging behind sometimes a temporary overcharge called EQ will remedy.
Note as a battery ages, the sg values will decrease and recharging time will increase. Battery capacity also diminishes every year.
Don’t waste money on chemical gimick’s that promise to rejuvenate tired batteries.
What to Know When Calling on Golf Batteries
Often when you call a battery shop about purchasing golf cart batteries, they will ask you what golf cart you own in terms of it’s voltage, ie 36, 42 (western carts) or 48 volt golf cart.
Tip, the golf cart voltage is the same as the charger you are using to charge the batteries.
Most common early model EZGO golf carts were 36 volt and later model EZGO RXV are 48 volt.
Typically in San Diego, you will find a Trojan brand lead acid 6 volt golf cart battery under the seat of your 36 volt EZGO golf cart. 
Other times you may see a Costco brand golf cart battery because they are inexpensive and low end.
How to Prolong Lead Acid Batteries
EZGO RXV are interesting because they decided to operate with four large (82 lbs each) 12 volt deep cycle batteries. These batteries are usually 150 amp hours each wired in series to equal 48 volt but only a sum total of 150 amp hours. Note, a lead acid battery will not last as long is discharged beyond 50% state of charge frequently. A better alternative to lead acid batteries is lithium iron phosphate golf cart batteries. Common 12 volt 150 ah RXV golf cart batteries are Trojan T1275 but can be replaced by LiFePO4 batteries by companies like BigBattery, RoyPow and Evolution.
Club Car golf carts are usually 48 volt using six 8 volt deep cycle golf cart batteries wired in series with an average of 150 ah. Lithium battery replacement is also available for the Club Car. The 48 volt carts will have more torque and climb hills better than 36 volt carts but have less range. If you would like to increase the speed of your 48 volt golf cart, look into upgrading the speed controller and possibly installing a higher horsepower motor. Club Car Precedent models are also 48 volt carts but like the EZGO RXV use four 12 volt deep cycle batteries with a minimum of 140-150 ah each.
The RXV and Precedent model golf carts are frequently repurposed for street because their top speed can be tuned.
72 Volt Golf Carts are categorized as EV or NEV for electric vehicle and neighborhood electric vehicle.
These batteries are different from traditional golf cart batteries and are significantly more expensive.

A good charger provides the base for well-performing lead acid golf cart batteries.
Always operate lead acid golf cart batteries after a full charge. Never operate at a partial state of charge (PSOC)
Lithium golf cart batteries are not hurt when operating in PSOC.
Charge often! Lead acid batteries must always be stored at full state-of-charge. Low state of charge causes battery sulfation, a condition that robs the lead battery of performance.
A cart with lead acid batteries that has been sitting off charge for a period of time may suffer Acid Stratification
Lead acid has a moderate life span that can be extended with good charging and is not subject to memory. In contrast, a LFP golf cart battery (lithium iron phosphate) does not suffer the problems of partial state of charge like lead acid and can be discharged more than 50% DOD (depth of discharge) long term.

Overcharging vs. Undercharging Golf Batteries
Oddly, undercharging, not overcharging, is the biggest killer for golf batteries.
The flooded lead acid battery grid is a lead alloy that uses antimony to help lock the active material onto the plate. But, if the battery is chronically left is a less than full state of charge, the lead sulfate PBSO4 will compound, harden and make the battery resistant to re-charging.

Q: How do I know the voltage of the battery I need for my golf cart?
A: Count the number of caps or cells on top of the battery and multiply by 2. Each cap or cell is approx 2 volts. # of cells x 2 volts equal the voltage each battery has , example, three cells=6 volt battery
Multiply the number of batteries x’s the voltage of each battery = the electric vehicle’s total system voltage. ie six, 6 volt batteries equal a 36 volt golf cart.

De-Sulfating Golf Cart Batteries
The chemical interaction that produces electricity from a golf cart battery also produces lead sulfate. When a battery is fully charged all the sulfuric acid molecules are bonded to water molecules (H2) to create battery acid or battery electrolyte Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4). When a battery delivers an electrical current the sulfuric acid molecules break their bonds with the water and combine with the lead dioxide (PbO2) in the plates creating a new chemical compound known as lead sulfate.
If the golf cart battery is left in a state of discharge, damage occurs when the lead sulfate compound is not reversed by recharging.
