If you have computers or electronics that you don’t want to be killed by power fluctuations, it’s a good idea to have a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) Backup. The battery in the UPS backup keeps your equipment running through blackouts our brownouts (reduced power).
Most common mfg for UPS backup is APC.
An APC UPS battery pack can be replaced for less than half the cost of replacing the backup power supply for your computer.
A UPS battery is a sealed, 12v maintenance free battery that is identified by the amp hour rating or "ah".
- Most UPS batteries are 12v but a few UPS Backups use 6v UPS batteries
- Some APC UPS battery packs will have two 12v UPS batteries connected together to achieve longer back up power
A UPS battery should be replaced every two years and is a very simple task for most UPS units.
Some APC UPS units have two 12v 7ah UPS batteries connected together via a docking station that is taped together. They can be more difficult to separate and replace but not impossible.
Tools Required: Screwdriver with plastic or insulated handle to avoid contact with UPS battery terminals.
Unplug APC UPS from wall.
Locate UPS battery compartment. Some APC UPS battery compartments will be located in the front panel while others are in the back.
- Loosen the connectors by gently wiggling them while pulling straight back from the battery terminal.
- Connect the UPS to new battery by gently pushing on to UPS battery terminals
- Always save any removed parts for re-installation
- Small sparks at the battery cable and battery terminal connection are normal
It is unlawful to throw any UPS battery into the trash. Our battery shop will recycle the battery for you.
